STATEMENT OF THE OFFICE AND PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION ON CONGRESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND CONDEMNATION OF VIOLENCE AT THE U.S. CAPITOL

Yesterday was one of the darkest, most shameful days in our nation's history. Incited by the rhetoric of Donald Trump, domestic terrorists stormed the U.S. Capitol and threatened the lives of our nation's lawmakers, their staffs and the men and women who serve what President Elect Biden called "the citadel of liberty." This insurrection was directly incited by President Trump and his allies and they must be held accountable. This president has violated his oath to the nation to defend and protect our constitution. He must immediately be removed from office.

Biden’s Victory Means Workers Once Again Have a Seat at the Table

New York, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2020) – Joe Biden’s election victory is a victory for working families throughout this country, bringing with it a renewed sense of optimism that they will once again have their voices heard in the Oval Office. As we celebrate this victory today, we know there is much work to be done and look forward to working with the Biden administration to reestablish and further the interests of all working Americans.

Elections Matter

Election Day is just weeks away and if we’re going to have leaders who will deal with the pandemic, protect workers’ rights, access to affordable healthcare, climate change, social justice, strong economy, affordable housing, safety regulations, and protect RBG’s legacy, our democracy is at stake, we must vote like our lives depend on it – because they do.

Voter turnout will decide the election, so union members and their families must vote to decide our future for years to come. A Bay Area civil rights legend, Betty Reid Soskin, one of the original Rosie’s from Rosie the Riveter turned 99 years old, her advice to the country was to go out and vote. Soskin said "I don't think there's ever been an election that's more important than this one, ever, since a great experiment began in 1776. Someone who has lived through over 20 presidential elections in her life says this election is the most important you have to take that seriously!!!

Labor Day | AFL-CIO

This year, Labor Day looks a lot different for many of us. The usual activities—the parades, backyard barbecues, and gatherings with friends and families—will be muted, postponed or canceled altogether.
